Black and White: With a Musical Twist

2014-01-08

In the first episode of Canal Vie’s Je marie mes parents, three wedding planners took turns presenting their concept in the hopes that the kids would choose them to organize their parents’ wedding. The children had to choose between Maryse (Formula 1), Rachèle (Black Tie) and me! I presented them with a Black and White: With a Musical Twist theme. Here’s what it entailed.

CEREMONY

To set the tone (pun intended!), I suggested a runner carpet for the church. It’s possible to personalize a runner with your initials or have it custom made with a piano-key theme. You can order one online from originalrunners.com. I have installed one of these runner carpets before and nothing could be easier. It’s very light and easy to roll out.

I also suggested making cones out of sheet music and filling them with rose petals. On the church steps, guests would be given a cone and asked throw the petals like confetti during the group photo. But do be sure to ask first, as not all venues allow you to throw petals. Once you have permission, make sure someone is on hand to sweep up afterwards.

COCKTAIL

To add a B&W touch, bubbly would be served in flutes sporting black bowties!

For the cocktail entertainment, I suggested a giant chess game.

But what I really would have liked was FAO Schwarz’s famous walking piano, like in Big. I did find it, but it was just a little too expensive to bring out.

I also looked for a “pianocktail ”.  A what, you ask? It’s a cocktail-making instrument thought up by Boris Vian in his novel, Froth on the Daydream. Each note played pours liquid to mix some pretty surprising drinks! I can keep looking if anyone is interested.

DÉCOR

Many inspiring photos are on my Pinterest board. Here are just a few, of a black-and-white wedding I coordinated.

WEDDING CAKE

Here’s the inspiration for the theme cake I suggested to the kids. It was designed by Dominique Matte, as seen on the show.

in the evening

For those who need a little pick-me-up in the wee hours, I suggested a soft-serve ice cream bar (with chocolate cones), white chocolate martinis (virgin for the kiddos, of course) and, how could we forget, a tower of Oreo cookies!

Do you like this theme? Does anything in particular strike your fancy? The kids ended up choosing Rachèle’s idea. What do you think I could have suggested to have the kids choose me? Send me your comments and ideas!
